TWO WAYS / Designer

‘We came across Merete’s paper rugs at Danish Crafts in Copenhagen and were immediately excited about the tight composition, the colours and the natural material,’ say Mette and Rolf Hay.

Merete Erbou Laurent is a classic crafts maker, and her work is shaped by the landscape where she lives and works. Shaped by the link between the surrounding nature and the images that come to her when she looks at it. Shaped by the traditional craft and the close interaction with her chosen material as she surrenders to the slow process at the loom. Merete Erbou Laurent trained as a weaver at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and her extensive experience as a practicing textile artist lends her work an immediate air of reliability and a convincing aesthetic. No loose ends here! In a process based on thorough craftsmanship and her skilled hands, she combines form and technical performance to a coherent whole even before the process begins. Alongside her career as an active crafts maker, Merete launched and edited the Danish Arts and Crafts Association’s magazine KUNSTUFF, coordinating form, content and logistics and acting a sensitive antenna picking up new trends in the contemporary crafts profession. After editing the magazine for 20 years, she decided to go back to weaving full time and supplemented her back catalogue with additional studies at the Aarhus School of Architecture. The following year she was selected to take part in the curated Danish Crafts Collection, which the Danish Ministry of Culture presents for the international promotion of Danish crafts and design – and that was where HAY encountered Merete.
