PRESS RELEASE / PALISSADE
HAY is pleased to present the Palissade Collection by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec.
Created for outdoor use, this balanced collection comprises 13 different furniture typologies that all share the same principle geometry. The collection has been developed over the course of two years by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for HAY. It grew from a period of research at their studio into outdoor furniture typologies. The final designs are made from powder coated steel and include dining chairs, tables, low stool, bar stool, bench, dining bench, lounge chairs and a sofa.
The Palissade collection is visually light yet reassuringly strong; it is classical in form and simple in construction. Each individual piece has been carefully engineered to hold the body in perfect balance. There are almost imperceptible, but significant changes to the angles, curves and the juxtaposition between the frame and slats in each different typology. The design itself provides comfort and elegance, while the colour palette of light grey, anthracite and olive allow the pieces to be at home in both natural landscapes and urban settings. The collection perfectly suits domestic terraces, gardens and balconies, or more commercial outdoor environments such as cafes, bars and restaurants.

DESIGN & DINE AT LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL
During the festival, the new HAY and Wrong for HAY showroom opens the doors of its Georgian house in St James’s. Reflecting the creativity and culture inherent in London, Wrong for Hay has invited a selection of creative collaborators to interpret and react to the space and the pieces within it. Helsinki-based, guest-chef Antto Melasniemi is creating a food offering that weaves Nordic foraging with London urbanism. Guest-interior stylists Benjamin Kempton and Melina Keays will use the space to explore unexpected ways of engaging with the HAY & Wrong for Hay collections:
‘We were delighted to be invited to guest-curate this show and have taken inspiration from the grandeur of the showroom’s space,’ say Kempton and Keays. ‘Eclecticism will be combined with bold colours, textures and shapes, suggesting new ways of using the HAY and Wrong for Hay designs.’
New Wrong for Hay products will be presented in the space alongside furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories launched by HAY and Wrong for Hay in Milan earlier this year.
A daytime café will operate alongside the exhibition, serving dark roasted coffee and tea, bakery items such as cinnamon buns, and light lunch options including charcoal bread

SHARED FIRST PRIZE IN HAY TALENT AWARD
The close competition between this year’s 33 finalists at the HAY Talent Award was won by two talents who represent two sides of HAY’s brand: German design student Joel Hoff, the Royal College of Art, London, for his industrial Switch Light, and English design student Hannah Waldron, Konstfack, Stockholm, for her woven tapestry Hand in Cloud.
The award money, 15,000 was therefore increased and split between the two winners, who each received 10,000. The ten members of the jury who were present were divided down the middle, with five votes for each finalist in the final vote, and since both projects represented quality work and a convincing idea, presentation and universe, the jury agreed to split the first prize, since the two projects represent two sides of HAY’s brand universe.
Sebastian Wrong said, ‘Joel Hoff has made a lamp that switches on when you turn the base and his solution is an intelligent play with light and functionality. If you pass by his hut, you will see many more of his designs that are equally convincing and we think his designs have a great potential for industrial production.’
Mads Arlien-Søborg comments on the jury’s motivation for picking Hannah Waldron’s project ‘Cloud in Hand’: ‘Hannah’s project is unique because she combines the historical gravity and expression of tapestry weaving with a modern design perspective. She continues the antique tradition of weaving and translates it into a technological industrial setting, preserving the unique crafts expression despite the industrial production method. In addition, the tapestry is a woven story based on a poem by Patti Smith, and the colour scheme is ultra-contemporary. She has created a multi-layered project that makes up a coherent and convincing universe.’
Rolf and Mette Hay thanked all the designers who were present and were excited to see the energy the students had put into their projects. ‘It’s a pleasure to see how far you’ve all come since we saw your drafts a few months ago. At the time, all we had to go by was a PDF, a digital rendering and a description – and now, here you are, presenting the finished projects. You have all performed at a very high level, and for that we are grateful.’
Big Game: ‘It is satisfying to see the projects live here at Formland since we saw them as PDF prospects. You can tell the amount of energy they put in it. The cabin concept is great. You can really see the students’ universe, and it’s easier for them to present their projects. You can feel that the students become more and more confident about their little cabin space. It has been great to experience the quiet focused atmosphere here, where everybody is concentrated on doing their best and winning the prize.’
HAY Talent Award is a town constructed around a stage in the middle of a market square with 33 cabins featuring talent projects where the students stay during the event and present their projects. HAY Camp, as the hall is called, also houses a restaurant and a coffee shop. You can visit the camp at Formland/UPgraded until Sunday in Hall E.

RONAN & ERWAN BOUROULLEC COLLABORATION WITH HAY
HAY has invited Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec to design a new collection of furniture for the redesigned University of Copenhagen (KUA). The collection includes a wooden chair, a bar stool and several tables. With this new collection it was our ambition to resume an old Scandinavian tradition of targeting specific architecture and specific needs in designing new furniture.
Ronan Bouroullec explains “Since the last century, there is a tradition in Denmark of asking a designer to design the chairs when new schools or universities are built. We are proud to be part of the university history"
The starting point for this series is an old university chair, architect Bernt Pedersen’s trestle chair. This chair is a simple and beautiful chair with an uncomplicated identity. In our interpretation we have upheld the original chair typology (trestle chair) and sought to maintain the compelling simplicity of the original chair.
We have attempted to create a range of educational furniture which in form and identity has a clear dating in our age and which in a compelling manner uncovers the current functional needs of a university. It has also been our aspiration to distance ourselves from the slightly institutional expression of the original chair and create furniture with greater originality and a more domestic expression.
According to Ronan Bouroullec the interior can contribute to making students feel at home, and provide a sense of balance: “One of the challenges that universities are facing today is that students do not stay at school after classes. The general aim of the project is to motivate students to stay on campus a little longer. So the idea was to do a chair which could be more domestic than a contract chair. We worked on the sensual feature of this collection – hence the working title: "A strong sensual stackable wooden chair".
The seat and back are mounted in the centre of the seat creating a highly flexible and resilient comfort – the seat follows the movement of the user. The chair also has a flexible back, which bears similarity to the cantilever chairs, which was first designed by the Bauhaus school in Germany in the 1930’s.
According to Ronan Bouroullec they conceptual phase went surprisingly fast: “Very quickly we had this intuition that for both reasons – comfort and probably price – we could cut the shell in two parts” "The A-shaped legs mean the chairs stack neatly in high vertical piles and the cost was kept down.”
Due to the symmetrical frames chairs and tables both stack vertically, allowing an almost infinite stacking, where most other chairs stack forward. The table tops are also mounted in the centre of the trestle frame of the table, which allows for natural cable run and establishes a visual relation to the chair design.
The collection will be available in soap treated beech, lacquered oak or black stained oak. The chair is also available with upholstery.

METTE AND ROLF HAY RECEIVE ANNUAL AWARD OF THE DANISH DESIGN COUNCIL
Thursday evening, Mette and Rolf Hay, co-founders and design managers of HAY, were honored with the Annual Award of the Danish Design Council. The ceremony was celebrated at the Danish Design Center in Copenhagen where chairman Mads Norgaard on behalf of the jury explained the award with these words:
"We do this to celebrate the spirit of entrepeneruship in everthing you do. In just a few years you have managed to create a company which, as the most natural thing in the world collaborate with the most brilliant designers from near and far without regard to either nationality or background. There is an attitude behind everything you do."
Upon their acceptance of the award the winning couple Mette and Rolf Hay’s comments were: "We are extremely happy and proud of the recognition that the Design Council has given us. It is overwhelming for us to enter in to the company of design icons such as Wegner, Panton and Ditzel - some of Danish design greatest talents of all time. We feel clearly over matched and are very humbled to have received this award. We're just a couple who spend our time making what we love - and we are still surprised every day that there are other than ourselves, who like what we do.
The Annual Award of the Danish Design Council is one of the most important awards in Danish design and since 1980 it has been awarded to people or companies that have significantly contributed to the Danish design environment. The list of previous recipients includes Hans Wegner, Verner Panton, Nanna Ditzel, Jørgen Nørgaard, Bo Linnemann and Knud Holscher.
