New season of SUICOKE and HAY sandals

We are happy to announce a new range of our "DEPA 2.0" sandals, created in collaboration with iconic Japanese shoe brand Suicoke. Available at a wide range of locations*, four new color-blocked versions curated by Mette Hay to follow the first edition launched in May 2020.

The color palette Mette Hay has created for the new collection fits with the rest of HAY's spring collection. We asked her about the collaboration and choice of colours.

What inspired you to collaborate with Suicoke? How did this collaboration begin?

Mette Hay:
It’s actually a sweet story, because it was my daughter Margrethe who initially introduced me to Suicoke when she was working with them as part of a fashion collaboration she did with the designer Cecilie Bahnsen. And from that meeting, we decided that HAY and Suicoke would also love to work together.

As the Creative Director of HAY Accessories, you are in charge of curating all the colours for HAY products. Do you have any guidelines or sources of inspiration when you decide the colour palette for each product?

Mette Hay: At HAY, we work with colours in an extremely spontaneous and intuitive way. While some companies make a colour scale for the season or for the year, we never do that. Instead, we always start with each individual project and find the colours and tones that feel right for that specific item. I feel strongly that there are some colours that work well on one kind of product, like a sofa, and just feel wrong for something else, like a toothbrush – so the colour process is first and foremost about the product itself.

For the Suicoke collaboration, there are four colour combinations -- "Mango Splash", "Forest Delight", "Urban Sports" and "Touch of Blue.” How were those developed?

Mette Hay: To be honest, I am not so good at putting words on how we work with colour! It's really just a gut feeling for me, and a sense of what works. I would say we try to make balanced colour combinations, maybe including one that’s more delicate, one that’s bolder, and so on – or sometimes we might have a specific person in mind when we develop a certain colourway.

What kind of fashion or style did you have in mind when developing these sandals?

Mette Hay: I think these sandals are extremely flexible and versatile. If you pair them with a dress, it can really make the look more relaxed – I think Cecilie Bahnsen’s styling is a great example of that. I think they work with any style of clothing, and that's what makes them so unique, because they’re both sporty and elegant, perfect for going to the beach or walking around London all day. I do think these days, people don’t want to walk around in high heels anymore; they’re more focused on stylish comfort and practicality, and these sandals are perfect for that.

Finally, could you give a message to your fans in Japan?

Mette Hay: I so much miss travelling to Japan. It’s definitely the place in the whole world that inspires me the most, and I am always so fascinated by Japanese style and the Japanese sense of detail, both in your homes as well as in your personal style. I also feel like there are a lot of similarities been the aesthetic sensibility between Denmark and Japan, and that HAY really fits in Japan!
